Further to the recent excellent news concerning the unification of the Wales Over 50’s National teams, we are delighted to announce the following developments in the ongoing and successful partnership between Walking Football Wales and the Walking Football Association, the National Governing Body for Walking Football in the UK:
- The next Wales international has been confirmed for March, against England at St George’s Park
- Further friendlies will be arranged as part of the preparations for the EUROs in June 2019
- There will be a new National League to be branded the Wales WFA National Premier League, which will be part of the growing network of WFA Premier Leagues
- The new National League will be run by a management committee appointed by member clubs, which will also include a representative of the WFA
- The National League winners will qualify for the WFA League Champions Cup
- Welsh clubs will continue to be invited to enter the WFA National Cup
Paul Carr, WFA Chief Executive, says “When we conceived and instigated the Wales National Team project, which involved the recruitment of the management teams, it was recognised that the demands were great, and the timescales were tight. However, both Hedley and Martin have done a magnificent job, with considerable help from my WFA colleagues, in getting 2 strong national squads together. Their work at Neath and with the National teams has undoubtedly also helped develop the sport within Wales.”
Hedley Austin, President of Walking Football Wales says “The WFA have been extremely supportive over the last 10 months, particularly in working with us to arrange the very first Walking Football International match between Wales and England. That was a memorable event for all concerned (several players said it was the best day of their lives!) and it could not have gone ahead without the support and help we had from the WFA. We therefore look forward to the continuation of our successful partnership; we will be working together on some exciting plans for 2019 and beyond.”
