England Walking Football

Background to the England Walking Football squads

The whole aim of forming England Walking Football squads at Over 50 and 60 was to raise the profile of the sport.

Paul Murtagh and Stuart Langworthy were appointed as Over 50 and 60 England Managers in October 2018 following a rigorous interview. They then set about selecting a squad for each age.

We had over 300 people originally nominated for trials at these two age groups. Four regional trials and one final trial later, two squads were selected to play the first ever match against Italy at The Amex Stadium, Brighton, in May 2018, with huge media coverage.

England Walking Football is a founding member of The Federation of International Walking Football Associations (FIWFA)

These squads have played matches against Wales, Gibraltar and Greece with return matches against Italy and Wales. They have also won the first ever European Nations Cup.

The players have become role models for the sport and away matches have created a great deal of interest in those countries and participation rates have increased.

Training of coaches and referees and ambassadorial work of England staff in other countries such as Hong Kong, Cyprus. Malaysia, Singapore, Guernsey, Greece and Rwanda has also really helped to raise the profile of the sport.

Many of those countries have now managed to form national teams themselves.

Some of these emerging nations are hoping to participate in the FIWFA World Cup, Manchester 2021.
