There are a growing number of “bodies” now involved in this fast- growing sport. For clarification purposes we list below the main ones, including details of their structure, functions and aims:
THE WFA (The Walking Football Association Ltd)
This is the National Governing Body for Walking Football in the UK, established in 2016. The WFA is a “not for profit” Company with a board of directors and compliant governance procedures, and is run by players. The WFA now has more than 20 executives and volunteers.
The stated mission of the Walking Football Association is “To raise the profile of Walking Football as a unique amateur sport throughout the UK, promote participation in the sport, inspiring activity, seeking to have an impact on physical and mental wellbeing, and maintain a high standard of competitive play leading to success on the national and international stage.”
The WFA have had regular meetings with the FA, and in May 2017 the FA confirmed their desire to work with the WFA in promoting and developing the sport.
A monthly E-newsletter is sent to over 1000 clubs and players. In 2017 the prestigious National Cup was rebranded having been given to the WFA. It is now expected that the 2018 WFA National Cup will be the biggest and best ever with an enhanced format and enlarged Grand Final.
A well respected WFA Referees Course, endorsed by Uriah Rennie, started in 2017 with 100 referees due to qualify by June 2018. The WFA is in the process of forming England teams, receiving fantastic club support, for the over 50s and over 60s. International matches will be organised in 2018 with EUROS 2019 and WORLD CUP 2020 planned. The WFA have signed a wide range of quality partners and sponsors who will greatly assist in the development and promotion of the sport.
Prostate Cancer UK are our official charity partner, with significant fund-raising events planned for 2018.
